Complete video at: http://fora.tv/fora/showthread.php?t=913 Reason Magazine Senior Editor Brian Doherty discusses the differences between libertarianism and traditional conservative ideologies. ----- Brian Doherty considers "Radicals for Capitalism: A Freewheeling History of the Modern American Libertarian Movement." This illuminating, lively history of a political movement on the rise - told through the life stories of its standard bearers - casts new light on the intellectual and political history of post-WWII America. Doherty traces the evolution of libertarianism through the unconventional stories of Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, and Milton Friedman, and their personal battles, character flaws, love affairs, and historical events that altered its course. In so doing, he provides a fascinating new perspective on American history, from the New Deal through the culture wars of the 1060s to today's divisiveness. In February, the Wall Street Journal noted, "With 'Radicals for Capitalism', Brian Doherty finally gives libertarianism its due...Mr. Doherty has rescued libertarianism from its own obscurity, eloquently capturing the appeal of the 'pure idea', its origins in great minds and the feistiness of its many current champions." - Cody's Books Brian Doherty is a senior editor of Reason, the libertarian monthly named one of "The 50 Best Magazines" three out of the past four years by the Chicago Tribune. Established in 1968 and a four-time finalist for National Magazine Awards, Reason has a print circulation of 40,000 and won the 2005 Western Publications Association "MAGGIE" Award for best political magazine. |

politEgoEgonomics ::: Favorites One mORe tIme - Libertarianism has absolutely no connection to Ayn Rand OR Objectivism. 07-05-05 07:04:41 _____________________________________________________
AynRandOeuvre ::: Favorites "Rand denied that her philosophy supported Libertarianism or any other political group or movement. She did not support or join groups which used philosophical ideas to reach political goals of any kind. "To join such groups means to reverse the philosophical hierarchy and sell out your fundamental principles for the sake of some superficial political actions, which is bound to fail. It means that you help the defeat of your ideas and the victory of your enemies. (IrvWdNs:98AR) 07-05-06 12:23:54 _____________________________________________________
jackson32 ::: Favorites Randians were a wing of the Libertarian movement by definition just because many of her ideas were Libertarian. Ayn Rand and her movement however was very flawed. First many of her ideas were wrong and some a little wacko. Secondly, the movement was a cult, you could not question her opinions even one iota or you were labeled "irrational". An article by Murray Rothbard on lewrockwell. com gives a very good view inside this cult. 07-06-09 02:07:52 _____________________________________________________
esteemnz ::: Favorites And the cultists speak out. Objectivism is as much a subset of libertarianism as Catholicism is a subset of Christianity. 07-05-17 12:45:28 _____________________________________________________

smb12321 ::: Favorites I think it is a mistake to assume that Libertarian equates to "Left." Personal, property and intellectual rights, pluralism, non-interventions, privacy, non-violence - these defy labels. Together they create a society of peace, prosperity and individual freedom. 07-07-31 12:12:42 _____________________________________________________ |
