Description: A few minutes before 9PM Pacific Time Tuesday - just moments after Bonds, the Giants' controversial left fielder, had hit his 756t A few minutes before 9PM Pacific Time Tuesday - just moments after Bonds, the Giants' controversial left fielder, had hit his 756th career home run to break Aaron's hallowed record, setting off a 10-minute celebration - a button was pressed in the audio/video control room at AT&T Park, and Aaron's face and voice filled the stadium, to stunning effect. "It is a great accomplishment which required skill, longevity and determination," Aaron said after first expressing his congratulations. "Throughout the past century, the home run has held a special place in baseball and I have been privileged to hold this record for 33 of those years. I move over now and offer my best wishes to Barry and his family on this historic achievement. "My hope today, as it was on that April evening in 1974, is that the achievement of this record will inspire others to chase their own dreams." It was perhaps the most impactful moment of a momentous night, as Bonds smashed his historic home run off left-hander Mike Bacsik of the Washington Nationals, rounded the bases beneath a hail of fireworks and photo flashes, and gave a brief impromptu speech on the field while a sellout crowd rejoiced. The Aaron video, however, stopped the entire stadium cold, including Bonds. "It meant everything," Bonds said late Tuesday night. "It meant absolutely everything." On Wednesday, the day after 756, not much had changed around AT&T Park, despite the historic events of the previous night. Bonds arrived early for that night's game against the Nationals and changed into his uniform earlier than usual, because it was team photo day. Bonds had spent much of the day accepting congratulations from friends, family and various dignitaries, including President Bush, who telephoned. "It was nice," Bonds said of his conversation with the president. "He said it was an outstanding achievement." The legacies of a handful of important figures were tied up in the run-up and the actual creation of 756, including that of Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig, who was notably absent Tuesday night but who issued a statement -- crafted by a team of MLB officials and advisers, including former presidential adviser Ari Fleischer -- that made an oblique reference to Bonds's alleged steroid use. Selig, perhaps realizing his legacy as commissioner is at least partially defined by its inclusion of the steroid era, made every effort to distance himself -- both literally and figuratively -- from Bonds, never making contact with the slugger despite being in attendance at 10 games the last three weeks, until telephoning with his congratulations Tuesday night. riceman0 ::: Favorites Um, try to follow here: they allow you to hit the ball HARDER, so it travels FARTHER, increasing the probability that it goes OVER THE FENCE which is called a HOME RUN, which is the record he just broke. The man got jealous of Maguire, and started cheating to take the record and has seriously hurt the sport in the process for his own selfish reasons. I don't have to respect nada. 07-08-16 17:00:36 __________________________________________________ |
