20.09.2007 - Braamfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa - Police fired rubber bullets at Khutsong residents protesting outside the Constitutional Court on Thursday. More than 1 000 protesters scattered into the streets of Braamfontein in Johannesburg but some later regrouped again, protesting outside the court against their municipality, Merafong, being included in North West province.Earlier, protesters burned tyres and there were also reports of stone throwing. Black smoke was billowing over the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg on Thursday morning where a few thousand residents were protesting against their inclusion into the North West Province. A large number of police were keeping the protesters well away from the court room where their legal team is arguing that parts of the Constitutional Twelfth Amendment Act, which transferred to the North West the Merafong Municipality - under which Khutsong falls - be declared invalid. While their counsel Advocate Andre Louw was facing difficult questions from the ten justices of the court, the residents were making their case outside the court.Fuck the oppression" reads one of the posters on display by the group as another pleads: "If I die buried (sic) me upside down so that NW can kiss my ass". 'If I die buried (sic) me upside down so that NW can kiss my ass' .Yet another poster states: "The people must tell you". The protesters have also set alight tyres, causing large clouds of black smoke. Police armed with shotguns loaded with rubber bullets and backed by water cannon for crowd control were keeping a close eye on the crowd.
