Really? on what facts is this based? Japan was gearing up for a all out Total War on the Home Islands and that doesnt factor in the expected 1 million+ deaths the Soviets also expected when they invaded from the north while we invaded the south.

An unconditional surrender was the only thing that would guarantee a final and absolute end to the war, and the Japanese had NO intention of doing that. Their plan was to force a settlement by making the invasion of Japan as bloody for the Americans as possible, regardless of the cost in their own lives. The nuke made that irrelevent, we could annihilate everything and not lose a man doing it. Those bombs saved countless American and Japanese lives.

Okay, just to clear up the history here, the Japanese had offered what we would term a conditional surrender, but they would have called a settlement. It would have meant that those in power would have stayed in power in Japan, but that the fighting would cease and Japan would just stay put in the places where it already was, it's the same deal that the Germans were offering for a while before they were at last forced to capitulate unconditionally.

My history teacher isn't very young, but that's beside the point. What is your story behind the use of nuclear weapons against the Japanese near the end of World War 2?

15 out of 16 teachers, across the board, so to speak are outwardly liberal and skewing much of their teachings. They are also young. I trust the words written by the contemporaries, (Japanese esp.) much more than new blood... With history, one HAS to research and research MORE to LEARN more.
